Fan works guidelines

The rules for fan works based on Kimodameshi Online.

We welcome all kinds of fan works based on Kimodameshi Online — illustrations, comics, novels, videos, cosplay, merchandise and more. As long as you follow the rules on this page, there's no need to apply or contact us.

Streaming the game, posting videos of it and monetizing them are covered by separate rules from this page, and are OK without applying, for individuals and companies alike. For details, see “For streamers” on the top page.

What you can do

Individuals, and circles or groups that are not companies, may do the following:

  • Create works such as illustrations, comics, novels, videos, cosplay and figures, and share them on social media, posting sites or your own website
  • Give your works away for free
  • Post your works publicly on services such as YouTube or X, and receive that service's ad revenue or tips (treated the same as streaming)
  • Accept a personal commission from someone and create a paid work just for that person (including through services like Skeb)
  • Use screenshots, gameplay recordings and the official site's downloadable assets in your works (see also “Using official assets” below)

Selling

As a rule, we ask that you don't sell your works. However, small-scale distribution as a fan activity, such as at doujinshi events, is fine if it meets all of the following conditions:

  • Keep the price to roughly what it cost to make, such as materials and printing (don't make a profit)
  • For each item, make no more than 100 copies, with expected sales (price × number made) of no more than 100,000 Japanese yen
  • Distribute only by handing it over in person at events, or through a small mail-order operation where you take the orders and ship them yourself

The following are not allowed, even if the conditions above are met:

  • Having a shop sell your works for you (consignment sales)
  • Systems where a company makes and ships each item whenever an order comes in (dropshipping), or made-to-order production with no set quantity
  • Selling downloadable data
  • Publishing in a way that only paying members can see (paid-tier-only posts on FANBOX, Fantia, Patreon, etc.)
  • Raising funds through crowdfunding
  • Turning works into NFTs or crypto assets

If you want to create, distribute or sell works as a company or other corporate entity, please consult us on our official Discord server beforehand.

What you must not do

  • Using or distributing data extracted from the game's files (3D models, images, sounds, fonts, etc.)
    • For example: turning an extracted model into an MMD model or a VRChat avatar, or ripping and sharing sound effects
    • This is because the game includes assets licensed from other rights holders.
  • Presenting your work in a way that could be mistaken for an official work or official merchandise (calling it “official” or “authorized,” adding the official copyright notice (©) shown at the very bottom of this site, etc.)
  • Infringing on the rights of third parties, such as using other people's works without permission
  • Defamation, discrimination or harassment against specific people or groups
  • Using works to promote or recruit for particular political, religious or ideological causes, or to raise funds for them
  • Anything that breaks the law

Using official assets

You're free to use screenshots, gameplay recordings and the official site's downloadable assets (the logo, ghost illustrations, school backgrounds, etc.) in your works. However, please refrain from the following:

  • Distributing or selling items that are little more than prints of the assets or screenshots (e.g., acrylic stands or button badges that use an official ghost illustration as is)
  • Using the official logo as is on things you distribute or sell (doujinshi, merchandise, etc.), as this makes them hard to tell apart from official products. It's fine to use it in streams, videos, thumbnails and works you share for free.
  • Redistributing the downloadable assets themselves elsewhere (please have people download them from this site)

Requests

  • It helps if you add a note such as “This is a Kimodameshi Online fan work” so people know a fan made it. On things you distribute or sell, please always state that they are unofficial.
  • We'd be happy if you also mention the game's title, “Kimodameshi Online,” and include a link to this site.
  • If you come across a work you think doesn't follow these guidelines, please don't blame or call out its creator — let us know on our official Discord server instead.
  • We may feature great works on our official Discord or in the developers' streams and social media.
  • Please enjoy making fan works at your own responsibility. We can't take responsibility for any disputes with others over your works.

Changes and contact

  • These guidelines may change without notice. When they change, we'll update the date on this page.
  • Even for works that follow these guidelines, we may ask you to stop publishing or distributing them. If so, we'd appreciate your cooperation.
  • If you're unsure about something, or want to do something beyond the scope of these guidelines, please consult us on our official Discord server. You can join from the link at the bottom of the page.
