Update

This update adds a “Gallery” where everyone can share haunted houses, new voting in which the traitor with the most votes becomes a streamer on the spot, stream chat and viewer requests, and Quick Match. Bonuses and penalties now apply to your viewers on the spot during the match, and we've also rebuilt the results screen.

What's new

  • Added “Gallery” to the left column of “Customize.” Through Steam Workshop, you can find haunted house sets made by other players and save them as your own sets. You can sort by “Newest,” “Popular” and “Popular this week,” search titles and descriptions, and filter by group and room. You can press “Like” on sets you like and see them all together on the “Liked” tab.
To receive a set, use “Save to set” in the in-game Gallery. Pressing “Subscribe” on the Steam Workshop page doesn't add it to the game.
You can upload your own sets from “Upload” in the set list of “Haunted house” in “Customize,” with a title and description. The picture is chosen from the room thumbnails of that set. If you turn off “Allow editing” when uploading, players who receive the set can't change its contents (they can still use it in matches, rename it and delete it).
Sets you receive show the name of the person who first made them as “Original: name,” and this can't be removed. You can report a problematic upload from “Steam page (report)” in the details window.
  • Added “Preview” to the Haunted House Editor. Press it to try out the set you're editing (its current layout, before saving) in a school with that set placed, playing alone as a streamer. The school is just that group's rooms lined up in a straight row on the first floor, and you start in front of the room you were last editing. If your SAN hits 0 and you go down, you get back up after 3 seconds with your SAN restored. Choose “Return to editor” in the Esc menu to go back to the room you were editing.
In the Gallery, you can also try out a set before receiving it in the same way, with “Preview” in the details window.
In Preview, no manifested form chases you and the school's photo targets aren't placed (you can photograph the props and cursed objects of the placed set). Nothing is recorded, such as subscribers or achievements.
  • Added “LIVE CHAT” on the left of the streamer's screen, where viewer comments scroll by. The comments match what's happening, such as when you take a photo, get caught in a trap, or are alone in the dark. The comments were written for each of the 8 languages in the style of streams in that country.
You can turn the comments off with “Stream chat” under “Display” in Settings (it's on by default).
  • During exploration, streamers now get personal requests from viewers. A request is either “Go to …” or “Photograph …,” and it appears on a card on the left of the screen with the time left. Complete it in time and your viewers go up; fail and they go down.
The destination is chosen as far away from other players as possible. On the “Map” in “Open information,” the destination room is colored yellow and labeled “Request.”
  • Added “Quick Match” to the “Play” screen. Press it to find and join a Quick Match room with open slots (or create one if there are none), and once 8 players are in, the match starts from the role reveal without going through the waiting area. While you wait, you stay on the title screen and can look at other screens such as “Customize.” The card shows “Waiting” and the number of players, and you can stop with “Cancel.”
The rules are fixed: 8 players, 2 traitors and a 3-story school. Your mic starts muted (unmute with M by default, or LT on a controller). After the match, you can look for the next Quick Match with “Play again” on the last page of the results screen.
  • Added “Link” and “Wait” rows to the panel that appears when a traitor selects something they placed (the panel with “Move” and “Remove”). For Link, you can choose one other item you placed in the same room (pick it from the list, or use “Pick on screen” and click the actual item). When that item goes off, the linked item also goes off after the Wait time (0–5 seconds). By giving the linked item a link of its own, you can chain as many as you like, such as trap → cursed object → sound trap…
Props and drawings used as links are normally invisible to streamers and appear only in front of the person the chain is set off on. You can set this up the same way in the Haunted House Editor, and it's saved with the set.
  • Added a “When” row (what sets it off) and, for cursed objects, a “Style” row to the panel for placed items.
For “When,” traps can use “When near,” “Back turned” or “Chain only” in addition to “On step” (as before), and cursed objects can use “When near,” “Back turned” or “Chain only” in addition to “On photo” and “Always” (“When near” and “Back turned” work within 3 m). Props can also choose “When” once you give them a link.
For a cursed object's “Style,” you can choose “Close-up” (as before), “Delayed” or “Sound behind” when it's “On photo,” and otherwise “Turn” (as before), “Slow turn” or “Approach.” For “Delayed” you choose the delay in seconds, for “Sound behind” the sound to play, and for “Approach” how fast it approaches.
  • Added the “Moving mannequin” cursed object. When you shine your flashlight on it (with “When,” you can also make it react when the light leaves it), after a short delay it heads straight toward that person and lowers their SAN if it reaches them. Photographing it stops it in place. You can set the delay and the approach speed on the panel.
  • Added the “Decoy” prop. It's a figure that looks exactly like a character someone is using in that match: it holds a lit flashlight and shows the name tag of the player using that character. It doesn't move, and nothing happens. Only one decoy per character can be placed in a school (it can't be placed in the Haunted House Editor).
  • Turned the “Haunted House” tab of the Placeable menu into a “Bulk” tab and added “Collect all” and “Random” on its left. “Collect all” collects everything you placed, wherever it is in the school (your fellow traitor's items stay). “Random” randomly places cursed objects, traps and props in rooms without a haunted house. Press it again to place them again. Like haunted houses, both can also be used during exploration.
  • While hiding in a locker, you can now see a little of the outside through the vent slits at the top of the door (you can also turn your head slightly).
  • When a manifested form appears, the music now switches to a dedicated manifestation track.
  • While there are chapters you haven't cleared, the “Tutorial” row on the title screen now shows the same “!” mark as News. In the chapter selection window, uncleared chapters are marked too.
Also, all streamer chapters and traitor chapters 2 and 3 now skip the preparation time and start from exploration.

Changes

  • Reworked how voting works. Voting starts when 30% of the exploration time remains and closes after 1 minute. If the player with the most votes when it closes is a traitor, they become a streamer on the spot (their viewers drop by the number of votes they got from streamers, and after that they gain viewers from photos and so on; the traps and cursed objects they placed remain; in the overall ranking on the results screen they're shown as “Former Traitor”). If the player with the most votes is a streamer, everyone is simply told so. If there's a tie or no one voted, nothing happens. Votes you don't cast count as blank (previously, voting started halfway through exploration, and a traitor who got votes from more than half of the streamers who could still act was named and could no longer manifest).
Traitors can now vote too, with the same number of votes as streamers, for anyone other than themselves (even while out of body or manifested, from “Vote” on the Tab screen; previously, traitors couldn't vote). Traitors' votes count only toward deciding who has the most votes, not toward scores.
The voting screen shows the time left until voting closes.
  • Bonuses and penalties (rescues, escaping, going down, no photos, etc.) now apply to your viewers the moment they happen, instead of after the match. Your viewers at the top left go up or down the instant one applies. Those that can only be decided at the end of the match, such as “All streamers survived,” apply when 30 seconds of exploration remain (previously, they were applied to your subscribe rate after the match).
The subscribers you gain from a match are now one tenth of your Today's viewers (your viewers at the end of the match), regardless of side. The subscribe rate has been removed. Along with this, we've rebalanced how much your viewers grow.
The “Great Footage” achievement is now earned by getting 9 or more bonuses in a single stream (previously, a subscribe rate of 10% or more).
  • Rebuilt the results screen. It starts with a graph where everyone's viewer lines grow at the same time. Bonuses appear as ▲ and penalties as ▼ marks on the lines, and you can hover the mouse over a mark to see what it was (for other players' lines, click a line to select it and show its marks). The last minute is hidden and revealed in the overall ranking.
After the graph comes your subscriber gain, then the overall ranking (by Today's viewers, with 1st to 3rd place shown large), and finally a table listing, for each participant, the bonuses and penalties that happened in this match.
  • Stopped using “Concurrent viewers” on screen. The wording is now unified as “N watching” (at the top left during a match and in the ranking on the Tab screen), “Today's viewers” (the count at the end of a match), “Peak viewers” (the highest count) and “viewers.”
  • The traitor's manifestation gauge now slowly fills over time during exploration (it doesn't fill while you are manifested).
  • When the same player is hit by the same trap, or by traps of the same kind (items on the same tab of the Placeable menu), several times in a row, they now lose less SAN. It returns to normal if they aren't hit for a while. The viewers gained by the traitor who set the trap shrink by the same proportion.
  • Traps and cursed objects now go off even beyond the rule that a player's SAN can drop only 3 times per 30 seconds (SAN doesn't drop). Previously, traps and cursed objects didn't go off beyond that limit.
  • Added rows to the panels for “Boo Bear” and the “Flashlight fault” trap. For Boo Bear, you can set “Trigger distance,” “Delay” and “Speed.” The default trigger distance is 4 m, so it starts moving at a closer range than before (previously 8 m; Boo Bears in haunted houses you've already made also become 4 m). For Flashlight fault, you can set how long the flashlight goes out, from 0 to 5 seconds (the default is 5 seconds, the same as before).
  • Changed where the manifested form appears. If you manifest while possessing someone, it appears right behind the person you're possessing (previously, it appeared where you started possessing). The manifested form now also always appears inside the school (including the rooftop and the pool), and if you manifest outside the school, such as in the courtyard, it appears at the nearest spot inside the school.
  • Made the heartbeat louder. The heartbeat now speeds up gradually as SAN drops (its top speed at low SAN is a little slower than before). The heartbeat speeds up when a manifested form comes near (the higher your SAN, the bigger the difference).
  • While you're downed (out of body), the face-and-name markers above other players' heads no longer appear (previously, they appeared above everyone who could still move). After death and on the traitor's screen, nothing changes.
  • Renamed photo targets to match how they look (for example, “Book that stays wet” → “Notebook that stays wet,” “Red-faced teru teru bozu” → “Red-eyed teru teru bozu”). Where 2 or more photo targets looked the same, they were merged into one, and we added 6 new photo targets (Broom that sweeps itself, Pot that never cools, Nameless gravestone, Venus that turns toward you, Bust with a shadow behind its eyes, Drawing of a family of four). Your past photo records aren't lost. The “Old name tag” prop is now the “Old bookmark.”
  • Removed “Flashlight brightness” from the room settings, so the flashlight now always has the same brightness (the same as the previous default). Removed “Sound subtitles” from Settings, so subtitles are now always shown.
  • You can now walk with the “Map” page of “Open information” open (the camera doesn't move, and you can't sprint, jump or crouch). Your position on the map is now an arrow that shows which way you're facing. The map is now oriented with the starting entrance at the bottom.
  • In-game News now shows up to 10 posts, newest first (scroll through the list of headlines; previously, it showed up to 3). Use “See more” at the bottom of the list to open the News page on the official website and read older posts too.
  • Updated the contents of the “Game Rules” window to match the current rules (the new voting, traitor votes, the manifestation gauge and viewers), and made it easier to read with subheadings and bullet points. Players who have seen this window before will see it again with an “UPDATE!” tag the next time they enter a room.
  • Polished the visuals. The outline glow of things you can photograph is now purple instead of gold. Improved the image quality of haunted house room thumbnails (thumbnails taken earlier are retaken when you open that room in the Haunted House Editor and press “Save and return”). We also polished the look of the lobby, Settings, the help windows, Customize, the rename window, the tutorial chapter selection window and more, and the loading screen at startup now has a new background and an effect where the logo fills up from the bottom.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed an issue where traitors couldn't open or close partition curtains, such as those in the Nurse's Office, while out of body or manifested.
  • Fixed an issue where, in places such as the Science Room, you sometimes interacted with a door even while looking at a locker near it (you now interact with whichever is closer to the center of the screen).
  • Fixed issues at the pool where you could get from the half-floor-high ledge of the storage shed onto the blue awning just below it, and where you could climb onto fences to reach places you weren't meant to go. Also fixed the yellow kickboards under the blue awning and elsewhere floating in the air.
  • Fixed an issue where, when entering a room's waiting area, you sometimes appeared in the room next to the entrance instead of at the entrance.

You can't play together with versions from before this update. If you can't get into the same room as your friends, make sure everyone has updated the game to the latest version on Steam.
