Streamers can now escape through the entrance. This update also brings big changes to how the game plays, including how spectating works, how traitors manifest, and how haunted houses are placed. We've also reworked the size of the school and how SAN relates to viewers.
Patch highlights
What's new
- Streamers can now escape through the entrance. Once the streamers, working together, have photographed a certain number of the photo targets scattered around the school, “You can now escape through the entrance” appears on everyone's screen (traitors see it too). The count is the combined total of everything photographed by all streamers, and the same target counts once no matter how many people photograph it. Photo targets in the pool and items placed by traitors don't count.
Once the message appears, hold the key shown in the “Hold to escape” prompt (E by default) for 2 seconds in front of the entrance door to escape. If you try the door before the message appears, you'll see “It won't open!” (Traitors can't escape even after the message.) - After you escape, you move on to spectating following the “Test of Courage Stream Complete” screen. On the results screen, your subscribe rate gets “Escaped alive” (×1.5), which is multiplied together with the other multipliers. An escaped player's viewer count stops at the number when they escaped and neither rises nor falls. Even once escape is possible, you don't have to leave right away: you can take a risk, stay in the school, and keep photographing to push your viewer count even higher.
- The voices and chat of escaped players, like those of dead players, reach only other spectators. An escaped player's body disappears from the school, and any key they were carrying is dropped on the spot. Escaped players can't vote. The match also ends before time runs out once every streamer has escaped (it still ends as before when only downed or dead players remain). Escaped players count as “All streamers survived,” and if even one streamer has escaped, the traitor doesn't get “All streamers died.”
- Spectating after death or after escaping now works by switching between other players' views one after another. By default, switch with A and D (or ← and →; left and right on the D-pad on a controller), and you see exactly what that player sees. Their name is shown on screen (SAN and viewer count are not). You can't watch a player who is hiding in a locker. The old spectating, where you flew around freely as a spirit, is gone.
- The traitor's manifestation has changed from something you can use once time has passed to a gauge you fill by landing traps. Each time a streamer is caught in a trap you placed and loses SAN, the gauge fills by 10, and when it is full (100 by default, or 10 traps' worth) you can manifest. It doesn't fill with time, so you can manifest early in a match as long as your traps land.
The manifestation display on screen shows the current and full amounts, like “40/100,” and “+10” appears when a trap lands. The gauge goes back to 0 when you start manifesting, and traps that land while you are manifested don't count. A trap that doesn't reduce SAN because of the limit on SAN attacks against the same person doesn't count either. When there are two traitors, each one fills the gauge only with their own traps.
In Room Settings, “Time until manifestation (first)”, “Time before manifestation can be used again,” and “Time reduction per trap” have been combined into a single setting, “Manifestation gauge capacity.” (Previously, the first manifestation became available 300 seconds after exploration began and later ones 120 seconds after the previous manifestation ended, and each trap that landed shortened the wait by 10 seconds.) - While waiting in a room, you can now paste saved drawings on walls and other surfaces. Press “Paste on wall” on the drawing screen to choose where to place the open drawing (an unsaved drawing is saved first, then pasted). Rotating and resizing work the same as when a traitor pastes a drawing during a match. Anyone waiting in the room can paste drawings, up to 20 per person and 3 kinds of drawings. You can take down a drawing you pasted at any time by aiming at it and pressing the key shown on screen (X by default). All drawings pasted while waiting in the room disappear when the match starts.
- Traitors can now place haunted houses during exploration, not just during preparation time. You can place them both in your body and while out of body (not during manifestation, possession or takeover). Haunted houses placed during exploration are also placed in rooms where streamers are.
We've added two buttons, “Place all” and “Rooms,” to each card in the “Haunted house” tab of the Placeable menu. “Place all” places items together, for each room type, in the nearest room from where you are (preferring the same floor); previously it picked at random among rooms of the same type. Placed items appear gradually. - Press “Rooms” to open that haunted house room by room, and re-place just one room while looking at the room's picture, the number of saved items and the room it will be placed in. Pressing a room's card places it in the nearest room of that type from where you are (items placed in other rooms of the same haunted house stay where they are).
A room's picture is the screen from when you pressed “Save and return” in the Haunted House Editor (on-screen text and buttons are not shown). It also appears in the “Haunted house” list under Customize. For rooms you saved before, open them in the editor and save again to give them a picture. - We've added “Collect all in this room” to the end of the cards in the “Haunted house” tab. After you confirm, it collects all of your own items in the room you are in (items placed one at a time, items placed by haunted houses, and pictures pasted on walls), regardless of which haunted house they belong to. Items placed by your fellow traitor are left as they are.
- While a traitor is out of body, pressing “Map” under “Open information” now moves your spirit straight to the spot you press (this works during preparation time too). The map also shows your spirit's position. On a controller, you can also move the marker on the map with the stick to travel. Not available during manifestation, possession or takeover.
Changes
- Made the school smaller. Each of the two wings is now about 60–70% of its former length, making it easier to go around every room (the wing length still varies from match to match, as before).
- The Art Room, Science Room and Music Room can now appear on any floor (previously they were placed on the 1st floor where possible). The Nurse's Office is the only room fixed to the 1st floor.
- Reduced the time a manifested traitor can chase (Room Settings “Chase time”) from 45 to 30 seconds. “Chase time” now appears on the basic tab of Room Settings, and the host can change it between 10 and 60 seconds in steps of 5 seconds (previously it couldn't be changed from 45 seconds).
- Smoothed out how much lower SAN boosts viewer growth from photos. Before, it jumped sharply only after SAN had dropped quite low; now it grows gradually as SAN falls and peaks at SAN 10 (lowering SAN below 10 doesn't increase it further). At a normal photography pace, the multiplier goes from about ×3 to about ×8 at SAN 60 and from about ×15 to about ×20 at SAN 25, and the peak goes from ×35 at SAN 0 to ×26 at SAN 10.
- Critical Combos now start at SAN 25 or lower, instead of SAN 20 or lower. The red glow around the screen edges also starts from the same SAN 25.
- Photographing the manifested form now gives a fixed +100,000 viewers, and photographing a ghost or an angry ghost gives a fixed +30,000 viewers. SAN, photography pace, Critical Combos and other multipliers don't apply (previously these were calculated like other photo targets, with ghosts and angry ghosts doubled on top). Each player can photograph a ghost or an angry ghost only once per match.
- Halved the size of ghosts and angry ghosts.
- Made every trap's trigger range a radius of 0.8 m (previously most traps used 1 m, “Locker rattle” 6 m, “Forced walk” 0.6 m and “Scare Drawing” 0.8 m). “Tunnel vision” no longer triggers when you look toward the trap (within 8 m); like the other traps, it now triggers when you get close.
- Public rooms can no longer start a match until 4 players have joined. If there aren't enough players, holding the gray Start button shows “Public rooms can start with 4 or more players. Set the room to private in Room Settings to start with fewer.” Private rooms can still start with 1 player, as before.
- When there are two traitors, a fellow traitor's name now appears in red on the traitor's screen (the name above their head, and under “Open information” in the “Concurrent viewers ranking” and “Vote”). Streamers' screens are unchanged.
- Changed how haunted houses are created. Pressing “Create in Group A” or “Create in Group B” under Customize > “Haunted house” now creates one right away with a name like “Haunted house 1” and takes you straight to the room list. You can rename it later with “Rename” in the room list (previously you had to enter a name first).
- If you don't have any haunted house containing placeable items, pressing “Play” now shows a prompt asking whether to open the Haunted House Editor (it also appears when you return to the play screen with “Back” from Customize or Emotes). “Open Editor” takes you to the haunted house list, and “Later” goes on to the play screen.
- While waiting in a room, players other than the host can now open Room Settings and view the contents. Only the host can change them, and non-hosts see “Only the host can change these settings.”
- Room language and region are now shown as two tags on every screen (when searching for a room by ID, in the room list, in room details and so on). Some places used to show text like “Japanese / Asia.”
- Made the “Input test” bar in Settings respond well even to a normal speaking voice (it barely moved before). The bar also now shows a line at the level where the talk light above your head turns on. Moving “Talk-light sensitivity” moves the line, so you can check how loud you need to be for it to turn on.
- Renamed the “Back to lobby” button on the results screen to “Back to title” (what it does when pressed is unchanged).
- Updated the “Game Rules” window. Page 1 now explains escaping (photograph a certain number of targets together → hold to escape at the entrance → survival bonus → spectating), and page 3 now lists escaped players among those who can't vote. The window now opens when you enter a room's waiting area, rather than during the preparation time of your first match. Players who have seen this window before see it again with an “UPDATE!” tag (it isn't shown when you open it yourself with “Rules”).
Bug fixes
- Fixed an issue where a manifested traitor's hand couldn't reach, and so couldn't kill, a streamer standing on a high place such as a locker or a breaker box. Streamers in high places can now be reached by approaching from the side (the kill distance on flat floor is still 1.5 m). Likewise, a player who went down in a high place can now be revived from the floor (the revive distance on flat floor is still 2 m).
- Fixed an issue at the pool, on the school-building side near the connecting corridor, where going over a low wall and dropping into the gap between the school building and the pool made you fall through the ground. We added an invisible wall and laid ground at the same height as the schoolyard in the gap.
- Fixed an issue where the pitch of the chime that signals the time remaining could suddenly rise if another sound effect (such as the Critical Combo sound) played while it was ringing.
- Fixed an issue where, when a streamer was downed, a traitor still wasn't named even if more than half of the streamers who could move had voted for them, because the game waited for the downed streamer to finish voting. It now judges the majority as soon as all the votes of the streamers who can move are in, without waiting for those who are down.
You can't play together with versions from before this update. If you can't get into the same room as your friends, make sure everyone has updated the game to the latest version on Steam.
